Every Voice, Every Story, Every Day!
Weekly Message from the Superintendent

Another great week is in the books for the Everett Public Schools.

The highlights included:
  • Tuesday’s Memorial Day Flag Placing at the Glenwood Cemetery (above). For the third consecutive year, members of the Central Administration team and principals joined me in placing American flags at the gravesites of veterans. My thanks to the City of Everett, the Office of Veterans Affairs, and Mayor Robert Van Campen for including the EPS in this important and cherished tradition.

  • Tuesday night was the EPS K-8 Art Night inside the Everett High School (EHS) Cafeteria. Thanks to Director Richard King and art teachers Avery Kallas, Mary Usmonov, Allison Lau, Gil Avelar, Alana Russell, Danielle Cobb, Stephanie Teehan, Shannon Scire, Amanda Pollard, and Amy Janicki for planning the event, which included an awesome display of student artwork, as well as art activities for students and families.

  • The scene shifted to the EHS Auditorium on Wednesday night for the Hispanic, Italian, and Latin Honor Society induction ceremonies. New members were inducted into the societies, while seniors received their graduation cords. The occasion was also used to  recognize and congratulate the more than 70 students who earned the state’s Seal of Biliteracy. Thanks to EHS Assistant Principal Karen Hughes and language teachers Kathryn Tocci, Mary Giordano, Julie Mak, Ruth Cardona-Suarez, and Sharon McInnis for leading the program.

  • On Thursday night, the EHS Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department held its inaugural National Technical Honor Society (NTHS) Induction Ceremony. Thanks to CTE Director Siobhan Araya for forging a relationship with the NTHS to recognize our students and expand the scope of our CTE program. Thanks as well to CTE teachers Lena Nguyen and Sara Witkus (Marketing); Nancy Chaves and Samantha Uga (Health Assisting); Carolynn Parmenter, Terry Sullivan, Rich Marino, and Corey Bourassa (Culinary Arts); Ben Schad and Eric Pierce (Carpentry); Adam Kvietkauskas and Robert Farrell (Advanced Manufacturing); Neeta Kalve and Lucila Howard (Programming and Web Development); Cheryl Learned and Sean Salazar (Hospitality Management); and Paul Cangiano (Employability).
Next week will be just as busy, as you can see below. Have a great weekend, and I hope to see at some of our upcoming events and celebrations.

Mental Health Awareness Month
Week Two of Mental Health Awareness Month focused on kindness and connection throughout our schools. Staff and students participated in activities such as kindness chains, “You Make a Difference” cards, random acts of kindness, and appreciation activities that helped spread positivity across buildings. It was great to see school communities coming together to recognize the impact that small acts of kindness can have on overall well-being. Thank you to everyone who participated and shared their efforts throughout the week! Below, Whittier Schools students, faculty, and staff wore green in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month on Friday, May 1, 2026.

Community is the Word (‘Grease,’ Too …)
Thanks to everyone who attended one of Everett High School Theatre Company’s two performances of “Grease” on May 7-8. The photo above was taken at Thursday’s opening night, where I was joined by Mayor Robert Van Campen and several teachers and administrators for a night of musical and theatrical entertainment.
