MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Finding a Permanent Solution for K-8 Space
Finding a Permanent Solution for K-8 Space
The City of Everett has unveiled initial plans and cost estimates to convert the old Everett High School at 548 Broadway into a junior high school for Everett Public Schools (EPS) Grade 7-8 students — a significant step forward in a years-long effort.
Mayor Robert J. Van Campen and representatives from the architectural firm Perkins Eastman and the project management company Left Field presented their findings and thoughts during a community meeting on Tuesday, September 30, 2026, at the Parlin School. The EPS was very well represented at the meeting, which was great to see but hardly surprising: No one knows how much we need classroom and learning space more than you do.
Providing our students and faculty with the best possible learning spaces and academic environment has been a labor of love since I was appointed Superintendent in 2023. While I can’t act unilaterally on this front, I have done everything possible to keep this issue in the minds and hearts of the community. Our diligence is, hopefully, starting to pay off.
So, where do we stand?
One, we have landed squarely and firmly on a Grade 7-8 school at 548 Broadway. This is our best option by far. That location gives us the space we need for Grade 7-8 students, while opening up dozens of classrooms in our K-8 schools. I have used the word “transformational” to describe the plan, while Mayor Van Campen calls it “generational.” That should leave no doubt that the EPS and the City of Everett are rock-solid partners in this endeavor.
Secondly, funding the conversion of the old Everett High School is squarely within the city’s purview. Mayor Van Campen outlined some funding options on Tuesday night, and those conversations will accelerate in the coming months.
In the meantime, I will continue to work to help the city put a plan in place that makes sense for our students, school, and city.
Have a great weekend, and I hope to see you at our Homecoming Festivities next weekend.
Together We Rise.
William D. Hart

EPS Proudly Represented at WIDA Conference
Congratulations to Director of English Learners Genevieve McDonough, Director of Language Acquisition Kim Pepper, and EL Coaches Kristen Portillo, Adrienne Kaminsky, and MaryBeth Benedetto. The group presented a session entitled “From Compliance to Collaboration: Building a Districtwide Language Development Vision” at the 2026 WIDA Annual Conference in St. Louis on September 15–18!
The presentation showcased Everett’s ongoing efforts to build a shared vision for multilingual learner success through collaboration across classrooms, content areas, and school leadership teams. The team highlighted how EPS is moving beyond compliance to create a coherent, districtwide approach to language development, grounded in the belief that supporting multilingual learners is a shared responsibility of all educators.
The session gave educators and district leaders from across the country an opportunity to hear Everett’s journey and highlight the collaborative work happening throughout the district.
