And just like that, we’re off!
We raised the curtain on the 2026-2027 school year this week, and my thanks to our faculty and staff for your energy and enthusiasm as we welcomed students and families to school on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
On Opening Day, I had the pleasure of joining Mayor Van Campen, School Committee Chairperson Samantha Hurley, and Vice Chairperson Marcony Almeida Barros at the Lafayette School. Principal Janet Taylor, Assistant Principals Melissa Jarem and Steve Venezia, and Lafayette faculty and staff helped parents and guardians, created an atmosphere of joy and anticipation, and efficiently organized students by grade before the opening bell rang. And I know the same scene played out at every school on Wednesday morning.
My thanks to the countless people who disproved the notion that school districts “close” over the summer. From our custodial staff who completed several projects and upgrades, to the administrators and directors planning retreats, orientations, and training and professional development, to the faculty who led our July academic programming, we had a productive summer that was instrumental in building momentum and setting the stage for the start of 2026-2027.
The “firsts” will continue next week. On Wednesday, we will welcome our first groups of full-day Pre-Kindergarten students to the Adams and Webster Extension, where approximately 280 students will begin their academic journey; and our first home football game is Friday, September 11, when we will welcome the Arlington Spy Ponders to Veterans Memorial Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
I look forward to seeing you in the coming days and weeks as we bring the mission of our Strategic Plan to life:

Title I and Summer Success
During the 2026 Title I Summer Acceleration Academy, 847 students in Grades PK–8 enrolled in programming across the district. The Academy provided students with a safe, supportive, and engaging space to learn, grow, and thrive. Through targeted instruction, hands-on activities, and collaborative learning experiences, students strengthened their literacy and mathematics skills while building confidence, communication, teamwork, and perseverance. Student assessment data demonstrated measurable growth in literacy outcomes, highlighting the impact of focused instruction and continued learning during the summer months.
The Academy also created meaningful employment and professional-learning opportunities for high school interns, who gained firsthand experience working in an educational setting alongside experienced educators. Interns supported classroom activities, assisted students, and developed valuable communication, leadership, and workplace skills.
Dedicated site coordinators, classroom and middle school teachers, substitute teachers, enrichment teachers, instructional coaches, ESL teachers, guidance counselors, and interns worked together to create an inclusive, enriching summer experience. Thank you to everyone who helped make the 2026 Title I Summer Acceleration Academy a success!

The Massachusetts Partnership for Youth (MPY) provides cutting-edge professional development and high-quality training. Focus areas include mental and behavioral health, social-emotional learning, school safety, trauma-sensitive classrooms, and positive school culture. MPY is regularly adding new webinars and conferences, so check back often to see what’s new!
To accommodate members’ busy schedules, MPY records all webinars and hybrid conferences. Webinar recordings will be available for 7 days following the live webinar. Conference recordings will be available for 10 days after the live conference.
MPY offers PDPs approved by the Department of Secondary and Elementary Education (DESE) and CEUs from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and the Massachusetts Mental Health Counselors Association (MaMHCA). PDPs and CEUs are offered for most webinars and hybrid conferences at no extra charge.
