Every Voice, Every Story, Every Day!
Weekly Message from the Superintendent

It’s always extra satisfying when a good idea turns out to be a sensational one. Earlier this school year, we started a monthly School Spotlight series with the simple objective of giving students the chance to talk about a specific initiative or project during School Committee meetings. It’s an understatement to say the Spotlights have hit the mark. In fact, it’s impossible to imagine going forward without them.

Above, Webster School Interim Principal Devon Abruzzese, teachers Deanna Griffin, Jessica Pelletier, and Shaelyn Paolucci, and Grade 3 students are pictured in the Everett High School Library after they delivered our January School Spotlight during last Monday’s meeting. The Webster followed the Keverian (“Knights Lead the Way: Empowering Student Voice”) and the Whittier (“When Reading Meets Science”). The Webster third graders talked about a group project entitled “Vertebrates Around the World.” I know I speak for many others when I say it’s been amazing to see K-8 students speak with authority and confidence in front of the School Committee — and TV cameras!

My thanks to the teachers, principals, and assistant principals who have put thought and care into planning the School Spotlights. We asked that participation is mostly student-led, and our faculty have made that a reality.

On deck for February: The Madeline English School.

Have a great weekend and … Go Patriots!

Check-In Check-Out Program at the Keverian
The Keverian School is excited to highlight the launch of its Check-In Check-Out (CICO) program, a relationship-based support system designed to help students build confidence, consistency, and connection at school. This initiative is made possible by the dedication of 36 teacher volunteers (above) who have stepped forward to serve as mentors and trusted adults for students.

Through daily check-ins and check-outs, students are supported in setting goals, reflecting on their progress, and strengthening positive school behaviors. The program reflects their shared commitment to student well-being and Keverian Knight SHIELD values, ensuring that students feel seen, supported, and connected.

"We are grateful to our staff volunteers for helping create stronger tethers that set students up for success," Principal Alex Naumann notes. “CICO strengthens the relationships that matter most. When students feel seen, supported, and valued each day, it changes how they show up in school.”

Leaders Among Teachers
Whittier and Keverian teachers Lisa Norberg and Maggie Moran presented at the Democratic Knowledge Project Winter Professional Development Day on Thursday, January 15, 2026.

The Grade 8 civics teachers are using a statewide grant to implement the Civic Engagement in Our Democracy curriculum. The grant provider invited them to present to colleagues and curriculum leaders from across the state on how they showcase student work.

Ms. Norberg (above, right) hosted a showcase in which Grade 5 students viewed and offered feedback on Grade 8 Bill of Rights projects, while Ms. Moran (above, left) arranged for her students to deliver a lesson on the Bill of Rights to Grade 4 and 5 classrooms.

Both teachers received a shout-out in the professional development feedback, with their presentation described as “top notch.”

Bol Stories, Bright Legacies
This year marks the 250th Anniversary of our nation’s founding. Massachusetts, the birthplace of the American Revolution, will celebrate with various activities and events throughout the year.

Please visit the MA 250 website for a full list of activities happening across the state.
As part of the Massachusetts 250 initiative, all K-12 public school students are invited to submit their creative work to tell the story of the most important revolutionary in Massachusetts history. Any student or group wishing to participate should use their talents and research to create a project about their chosen revolutionary. The project can be a visual art piece, an essay, a documentary, a performance, or any other creative format.

All submissions are due by April 17, 2026.  Later in the spring, winning entries will be notified and invited to a MA 250 celebration at a Massachusetts historical site to share and celebrate their work! Please review this list for inspiration on Massachusetts revolutionary figures and sources. For any other questions, please contact K-8 Social Studies Director Marena MacLaughlin ([email protected]) or Everett High Social Studies Director John Flannery ([email protected])
