Debate Team Continues to Expand — and Impress
Everett High School’s participation and prominence in the Boston Debate League’s Debate en Español (DeE) division continues to grow, thanks to the talent and dedication of our students and the leadership of advisors Ruth Cardona-Suarez and Catalina Espinosa Ramos.
Everett High School (EHS) debaters have turned in strong performances during the competition season, garnering awards and accolades for their powers of persuasion, enthusiasm, and engagement. Two EHS students, Elizabeth Rivera and Nathaly Romero, have earned spots in the DeE City Championship Semifinals, which will take place on February 27, 2025, at Southline Boston. The Finals are slated for March 7, 2025, at the Museum of Science.
Kristin Calix also impressed at a recent debate at Suffolk University, earning the Top Speaker Award, a prestigious honor that recognizes her exceptional debating skills, persuasive arguments, and ability to engage with the competition at the highest level.
Operating seamlessly alongside the Boston Debate League (BDL) English policy debate division, DeE debaters engage in spirited competition at tournaments, scrimmages, Debate Academies, and other BDL programming. Debate en Español rounds are conducted entirely in Spanish, from the debates themselves to the judging process. EHS participation in the BDL began in 2020 and participation has grown in the years since. Additional EHS Highlights from the 2024-2025 Season:
Engaged Debaters of the Season: Santiago Turizo, Anderson Pineda, Ashley Morán, Katharine Palacios, Elizabeth Rivera, Nathaly Romero, and Kristin Calix. These students made strong arguments and showed enthusiasm and commitment to improving their skills.
Top Speaker Award: Elizabeth Rivera, whose ability to articulate ideas with clarity and confidence made her stand out among competitors. She has also been a role model, consistently demonstrating hard work and mentorship for her peers.
Everett Legacy Award: Calix, who was honored for her leadership, dedication, and lasting impact on the team.
