EPS principals and School Committee members joined Superintendent Willam Hart in congratulating Everett High senior Tre’von Carrington for receiving this year’s scholarship. In addition, the Everett High School Choir, under the direction of Corey Crofoot, performed a selection of songs befitting of this cherished community celebration.

Tips for Working with an Interpreter
Our fabulous family liaisons often serve as interpreters at meetings and other events. We are so grateful for their language expertise and knowledge of our families' cultural backgrounds. You can help the family liaisons when they serve as interpreters. Here are five simple tips for working with interpreters:
  1. Introduce yourself to the interpreter. Acknowledge your interpreter, encourage questions, and offer a general overview of the meeting's topic and key points if time allows.
  2. Speak directly to one another. It's tempting (and let's face it, more comfortable) to face the person who is speaking the same language, but your tone, eye contact, and expression will help to make a connection even when the languages differ!
  3. Slow down! No, seriously. Slow down. If you're not speaking uncomfortably slowly, you're talking too fast.
  4. Simply your language. Avoid idiomatic expressions, complex sentences, and multi-step questions or instructions.
  5. Pause often. As a rule of thumb, you should pause at every punctuation mark. Don't wait for the interpreter to hop in. They are waiting for you to pause. Smaller chunks=more accuracy!
Extra Tip: If there are any handouts, forms, or documents to share, print copies of the materials and share them with our family liaisons so they can review them and best prepare for the meeting.
