Maximum Impact
Everett High School freshman STEM students and teachers Adam Simpson, Michelina Tumblin, and Alex Young celebrated SPACE Week and STEM by hosting a Model UN Planetary Defense workshop during science classes on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

Three representatives from The Space Consortium, including founder and director Dr. Alissa J. Haddaji, led the workshop, which combined elements of history, international relations, law, astronomy, and engineering. Students received an introduction to international space diplomacy and planetary defense and took part in an interactive simulation in which they acted as UN Security Council delegates tasked with working together to respond to a simulated asteroid threat.

During the Security Council exercise, students were assigned roles, including journalists and researchers from countries around the globe. They then prepared for a potential asteroid impact on Earth one year in the future. Students worked creatively and collaboratively to develop possible solutions. Discussions ranged from whether to share information with the public to when to deploy weapons to destroy the asteroid. Finally, they compared their plans with those of scientists who ran the same simulation.

Thanks to the dedicated team at The Space Consortium for bringing this engaging learning opportunity to Everett High School.

No One But Two A’s
MassBioEd representatives helped Everett High School (EHS) students conduct visited Everett High School (EHS) students to conduct an “A1/A2 Milk Cattle Genetics Lab” on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.

Deb O’Reilly and Kailyn St. Germain from MassBioEd lent their time and expertise and provided the supplies needed to perform the lab. EHS teachers Dr. Jeffrey Ahern and Dr. Chris Backlund coordinated the visit.

Cows with A1 genes produce milk proteins that some people find harder to digest than milk from cows with the A2 gene. In this lab, students learned how DNA and beta-casein gene genotypes link to phenotypes and gene expression in A1/A2 milk proteins.  Students used gel electrophoresis to separate PCR products (DNA) and confirm the beta-casein genotypes of a group of cattle. They used this information to genotype cows as A1, A2, or a mix and select cows to establish a new A2 milk herd to produce milk that consumers can digest more easily.
