HISPANIC AND LATINX HERITAGE MONTH
Special thanks to author David Morales for speaking to Everett High School students as part of the district’s Hispanic Heritage Month. He talked about his experiences growing up in Puerto Rico and Lynn, Massachusetts, as well as his book, “American Familia: A Memoir of Perseverance,” a raw and inspirational work that proves the American Dream is alive and well. Students who attended the talk received a raffle ticket to win a copy of the book.

JEANS DAY FUNDRAISERS:
Friday, September 30th and Friday, October 7th
We have two district-wide Jeans Day fundraisers scheduled for the next two Fridays. Please make your $5 donations to your building’s administrative assistant. Details are as follows.
Friday, September 30th — To benefit the Immigrant Learning Center, in recognition of Hispanic and LatinX Heritage Month; final donations should be forwarded to Brittany Hay, Director of English Learners.
Friday, October 7th — To benefit a Whittier School family that greatly needs our generosity and support; final donations should be forwarded to Principal Michael McLucas.
EPS OPPORTUNITIES
AFTER-SCHOOL ROBOTICS (FIRST LEGO LEAGUE)
COORDINATOR AND INSTRUCTING POSITIONS
The EPS is seeking a coordinator and instructors to launch an After School Robotics Program in partnership with the FIRST© LEGO© League (FLL). The coordinator will oversee FLL instructors in our five K-8 buildings and the Webster School.
The Robotics Coordinator will assist the Director of STEM with orders, organizing of teams, student recruitment, permission slips, team and family registrations on the FLL website.
Instructors will guide student teams to think like scientists and engineers as they design, build, and program a LEGO© MINDSTORMS© robot to solve a particular STEM challenge in preparation for the MA FLL competition in Revere on December 10th. Coaches will be paired with FLL mentors for support.

ADDITIONAL TEACHER MENTORS
The district is seeking Teacher Mentors to work with EPS colleagues who are pursuing professional teacher status. Mentors are key components of our teacher orientation process. They are responsible for training assigned mentees in instructional strategies and curricula and operational processes.

EL PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITY
The Department of English Learners is seeking one facilitator and 15 educators to participate in a professional learning community to deepen their practice on supporting English Learner students and families. This working group will meet once a month to engage in collaborative conversations around a common text so that teachers can share learning to enhance effectiveness of EL instruction in EPS classrooms.
The conversations will be grounded in four texts:
- The Communication Effect: How to Enhance Learning by Building Ideas and Bridging Information Gaps by Jeff Zwiers
- From Equity Insights to action: Critical Strategies for teaching multilingual learners by Andrea M. Hönigsfeld, Maria G. Dove, Audrey Cohan, and Carrie McDermott Goldman
- Teachers as Allies: Transformative Practices for Teaching Dreamers and Undocumented Students by Lori Dodson
- Boosting Achievement: Reaching Students with Interrupted or Minimal Education by Carol Salva and Anna Matis.

GLEAM LEADERSHIP TEAM
The EPS is seeking teachers to join the 2022-2023 GLEAM (Growing Literacy Equity Across Massachusetts) Leadership Team to support the district’s implementation of a multi-tiered system of support for ELA/Literacy that promotes equity of access and achievement for diverse students.
The team will be made up of district leaders, school leaders, and teachers from each of the schools, guided by the goals of the implementation plan, will work to ensure successful use of the curriculum, collaborating across schools and planning for ELA CPT time at each school.

Educators Sought to Participate in Virtual PD Day
The 5DP will host its fourth 5DP Shared Professional Development Day on November 8, 2022. The 5DP will continue to explore the theme of Equity for All and are seeking teacher and staff presenters to share their knowledge, experience and wisdom during this virtual PD day. Organizers are looking for a broad range and variety of teacher- and staff-led presentations this year, particularly sessions that focus on racial equity, social emotional learning, strategies for EL and other diverse learners, and wellness. Offerings for specialist teachers and staff (CTE teachers, nurses, counselors, etc.) are also very desirable.
As we did last year, the EPS will offer $300 to any EPS educator who leads a session during 5DP Professional Development Day to help you prepare your presentation.

More details for presenters:
- The deadline to apply is Wednesday, October 12, 2022. You will be informed by Friday, October 14, 2022 if your application is accepted. (The PD Day is Tuesday, November 8, 2022)
- Sessions should have a connection with the theme of Equity for All. We are looking for sessions on inclusive instruction and assessment practices as well as SEL and self-care for students and teachers.
- Sessions will be conducted virtually (using Zoom or Google Meet). If you do not have a suitable Zoom/Google account, we will find you one to use
- There will be two 60 minute presentations. You can decide if you would like to offer your session once or in both slots.
- You will be compensated for your preparation by your districts in accordance with their rules/procedures for compensation. Please check with your district if you are unclear about these guidelines.
