December 21 Meeting Canceled
Statement on the cancelation of tonight's
School Committee meeting
DECEMBER 21, 2020
To the Everett Public Schools Community,
We are profoundly disappointed that we must cancel this evening’s School Committee meeting due to an oversight by City Hall in posting the School Committee agenda in a timely manner. While the agenda was posted on our own Everett Public Schools website and submitted to City Hall as per the posting requirements, since the agenda was not posted on the city’s website nor was it physically posted at City Hall, the law requires us to cancel our meeting.
The EPS and our School Committee members put significant effort into preparing meeting agendas that are robust, informative, and transparent. We meet on the first and third Monday of each month, and it remains our goal to use these meetings to provide crucial information to the families of the Everett Public Schools. We are working with City Hall to determine what steps will be taken in order to ensure this does not happen again so that we, as a city and as a school system, are able to collectively meet our obligations to our community and to our constituents.
Rather than reschedule the meeting for Wednesday, December 23 — a night when people should rightfully expect to be settling in for the holidays — we will next meet on Monday, January 4, 2021.
Since we are unable to meet this evening, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge Chairman Thomas Abruzzese. The chairman’s two-year term concludes at the end of 2020, and I feel compelled to express my gratitude to Mr. Abruzzese for his leadership, conscientiousness, disposition, and wisdom. He has led the School Committee through tumultuous and challenging times with skill and decisiveness. Under his leadership, the School Committee was awarded an All-State School Committee Award by the Massachusetts Association of School Committees. I want to thank him for his contributions to our school system and to our overall community.
Lastly, because there is not a School Committee meeting tonight, we encourage our families and community to watch the rescheduled meeting of the Everett City Council. The meeting will be broadcast on ECTV. I encourage you to tune in, as the agenda includes several agenda items regarding changes to the City Charter in regards to the composition of the Everett School Committee. The School Committee had hoped to discuss these items at our own meeting this evening. While that is no longer possible, we do look forward to being invited by the City Council to have a dialogue around these changes..
Thank you. Have a great week and a restful and enjoyable holiday weekend. We look forward to being together again on January 4.
